The key with vertical jump training is that you have to avoid the very common mistakes that most people make. The number one thing that you need to be aware of is doing too much too quick. Pace yourself and you will see better increases in your vertical leap than trying really hard for 2 weeks and then giving up.

This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t train hard, because you should. It just means that if you don’t know what you are doing you can waste a lot of time and energy. If you have a jump training program from someone that knows what they are doing then you can follow it and train hard. But the problem is that most kids try to do workouts that are not going to give them results and they just end up over training their bodies.

Knowing how to train in order to jump higher is key. You can’t just go to the gym and do random leg workouts expecting to see amazing results. If it worked that way, every kid would have a 40 inch vertical leap. There is a science that needs to be followed and jumping programs have it figured out. If you are looking to buy a vertical training program I can steer you in the right direction, Click Here to see the workout that I used to gain 2 inches after just 5 workouts!

The best thing about any vertical jumping program is that you can get results that you may have thought were impossible before. Vertical leap training is a great way to jump up to 10 inches higher in as little as 10 weeks. But lets look at some important factors that must be taken into consideration before you buy a jump higher program.

What jumping exercises should you be doing to increase your vertical?

Before I can tell you how to do plyometric workouts, you have to have the strength in your legs to handle to them. If you don’t you will run a high risk for injury. So you need to strengthen you legs and joints by normal weight training. This means you will be doing a lot of the basic movements with weight.

Squats
Lunges
Hamstring Curls
Cleans

You get the picture? You should have no problem squatting your weight ten times. This doesn’t mean you own body weight, I mean your weight on the bar while you squat. If you can’t squat your weight you might wanna hold off on buying a vertical leap program for a couple weeks until you gain a little bit of strength.

Which vertical jump program should you buy?

This is a great question. You can see my personal favorite, the Jump Manual. The Jump Manual program will produce results and you will get sore at least for the first 2 weeks like I did. It got me really sore, but that’s because I wasn’t training my legs at all before I started it. Visit www.JumpManual.com.

I have many people often asking, do squats increase vertical jump? And the answer varies for every person. For one person, yes squats will make you jump higher but for another person squat won’t increase vertical leap at all. The reason being that the first person might have weak legs and that is what is hindering their jump performance and for person number 2, they could have very strong legs and that is where they are getting almost all of their jump height. It all boils down to if you personally lack strength or speed.

A person that wants to learn how to jump higher has to realize that vertical jump training exercises need to be designed around which areas of your body need to improve the most. If you have really strong legs but lack speed, you need to do plyometric exercises but if you already have the speed and need strength you will have to focus more on the strength gains.

To increase vertical is takes more than just doing either speed drills or strength training, you have to do a combination of the two.

Most people don’t understand plyometrics and that is why you should buy the Jump Manual or the Jump Mentor. They are both vertical jump training programs that work. They teach you how to improve vertical jump using plyometric boxes and other workouts.

What is the sport that depends on jumping more than any other, the sport that places the greatest importance on jumping? Volleyball! You might have guessed basketball but you would be wrong. To be even more specific, beach volleyball players depend on their ability jump high more than any other athletes in the world. Sure it’s important to learn how to jump higher for dance, cheer leading, basketball, football, gymnastics, soccer and many other sports but none have the same demand as beach volleyball.

A beach volleyball workout can essentially be called an increase vertical volleyball workout. If you want to increase vertical leap for volleyball you need to focus on a few main things. First off of you will be jumping from 2 feet so there is no real need to do any type of vertical jump training off of 1 foot.

Squats are one of the most important exercises to increase your vertical. But it can’t be said that they are the single best exercise to jump higher. The truth is that you have to have a combination of many exercises to really get true results. If you want to know how to get better hops you have to train with plyometric workout and strength training workouts. Vertical jump training exercises will increase vertical more than almost anything else you can do but you still need the normal strength gains from a typical gym leg workout routine. Air alert exercises require you to jump way too much at sub-maximal heights which will not help you. So as you would think an Air Alert workout will not give you results that you want. You may see very small gains but they will come at a cost of over-training and injury risk and over a long period of time. You need a jump program that works.

Time to increase vertical jump now. You have been playing at less than your potential for too long and it’s time that you learn how to increase your vertical so that you can excel at your sport.

How do I increase my vertical jump?

You have to start by doing plyometrics which are jumping exercises that will give you ups like you won’t believe. They focus on training the golgi tendon reflex of the legs. This is the same reflex that the doctor tests by tapping your knee with a little hammer to see if your foot reacts without you even trying to move it. This same unconscious muscle reaction happens when you squat down right before jumping and plyos will make it happen with more power without you even being able to control it.

But plyometric workouts aren’t the only thing that will get you jumping higher. You have to train for strength gains in your legs as well. A good leg workout routine will help you produce more strength and greater strength is half of the equation of jumping higher. The equation is as follows Strength+Speed=Power. The strength will come from working out with weights and the speed will come from doing jumping workouts called plyometrics.

If you are serious about learning how to jump higher through plyometrics which are vertical jump training exercises, you have come to the right place. The science behind plyometrics is sound and it does work if you follow a well designed program.

I will give you some workouts that will help strengthen your muscles and increase your vertical leap so that you can be ready to get a true jump program like the J.M.

First off, you have to be strong enough to even begin a plyo workout routine because it will put a lot of stress on your body. I recommend losing some weight if you are overweight right now because your knees will not enjoy it if you don’t.

To start a vertical jump training program you need to be able to squat you weight 8 times in 8 seconds. If you are a female, then you should be able to squat your weight 5 times in 5 seconds. If you have a very hard time squatting your weight then you need to do some leg workouts in the gym to build up enough strength to start a jumping program. When I say your weight, I don’t mean to squat your own body weight, I mean if you weight 150 pounds, you put 150 pounds on the squat bar and squat with that. Some trainers think you should be able to squat twice your weight before starting jump training but that is not necessary.

You will continue to build strength as you build speed and this will result in great results for your vertical jump.

The first thing you need to do is mark how strong you are on each leg lift. You will notice a direct correlation between your strength increases and increases in your jump height.

Never train with jumping exercises and weights at the same time or even on the same day. You will have a day for working out with weights and a day to do vertical jumping exercises.

You want fresh, strong legs when doing any kind of jumping training because you want to get as high as you can on each and every jump. Never jump so much that you can barely jump off of the ground. This will do you no good! Stop jumping when you feel that you aren’t getting within an inch or 2 of your highest jumping ability with fresh legs.

Plyometric boxes are a great way to build some fast twitch muscle. You will use them often, but be careful of the impact that landing will have on your knees.

Volleyball players train with these boxes as do basketball players. If you want to learn how to jump higher in basketball you have to follow a good workout program designed to improve you vertical leap.

Plyometric boxes come in all different heights and they are to be used on separate days from strength training. Do not wear weights when doing box jumps, especially not on the ankles. Ankle weights are horrible for your joints and will NOT help you jump any higher.

Plyometric exercises are the number 1 way to improve vertical leap. Lets go over some of the best plyometric exercises you can do to help you get a jump on your competition.

Box Jumps
You don’t want a box so high that you can’t bounce right back up once your feet hit the ground. What I mean by this is that you can’t replant in between every jump. You have to bounce right back up between each rep. The whole point of plyometrics is to sync all of your fast twitch golgi tendon reflexes. At the same time you need the boxes high enough to be challenging so that you don’t do really high reps. Keep the reps low when doing plyos.

Calf Raises
These are not a plyometric workout but they are important to do to strengthen your calves before you start a plyo workout. Plyos are very intense and put a lot of stress on your muscles, joint and tendons. You want to make sure that you are strong enough to start plyometrics. This means doing plenty of calf raises to build strong calves.

Hamstring Curls
I can’t stress the importance of calf raises enough. It’s obvious to most people that you need strong calves and quads to jump high but hamstrings are equally important as well as glutes. You need to have strong hamstrings if you want to learn how to improve vertical jump. The highest vertical jump in the world could be held by you if you get really strong hamstrings while training them with plyometrics at the same time.

Here on this site we discuss workouts that will increase your vertical and try to help you understand the science and kinesiology of jumping. Well, I talked to the creator of the Jump Manual, Jacob Hiller, and he allowed me to try his Jump Manual and talk about it here on the site. I am always up for trying new workouts that focus on increasing vertical leap because that’s what we cover here on IncreaseVerticalWorkouts.com.

I am an experienced jumper and the results I got from the Jump Manual blew me away. I started the first week and got very sore in my hamstrings because I have neglected them lately. So I wasn’t able to work out for 3 days after the first workout. The reason being that I was following Jacob’s advice to not do any jump training while sore. So once I got back in the gym I got super sore again, but not for 3 days like before. All in all, I worked out my legs 3 times in the first week and ended up gaining 1 inch. The second week was better because I didn’t get so sore and gained yet another inch.

Now you might be thinking that 2 inches in 2 weeks isn’t anything to write about but you are mistaken. I’m not a beginner, so it’s harder for me to gain inches on my vertical leap. I already have a vertical in the upper 30’s and getting 2 inches in 2 weeks is mind blowing for me. If I were a beginner I easily would have gained 4 inches in those same 2 weeks.

What the Jump Manual promises is 10 inches added to your vertical leap and I think it is attainable for most people. You can see all the testimonials of people that have had success using the Jump Manual here.

It’s normal to be skeptical, I was for 27 years. I didn’t think that you could gain inches to your vertical so quickly.

A plyometric volleyball workout is absolutely necessary if you want to be able to compete at a high level of competition. No matter how high you can jump right now, you can jump higher. Maybe you are jumping 30 inches and think that you are doing alright, but you have at least 10 inches more that you can gain on your vertical. A great vertical jump in 44 inches and there weren’t many people that could jump that high a few years ago. But as science and knowledge of jump training grow, more and more people are getting to 44 inches and beyond. When I got to 36 inches I thought that I was jumping really high but then playing beach volleyball against people with verticals in the 40’s quickly humbled me and put me back to the gym.

Focusing on the best exercises to increase vertical leap will give you results faster than spending countless hours in the gym training ineffectively. Jumping requires a perfect combination of plyometrics (jumping exercises) and strength training the traditional way with weights.

I can’t emphasize how important it is to know where you are strong and where you are weak. If you have strong quads and weak hamstrings, it WILL affect how high you can jump. You have to be well balanced. At the same time if you have strong legs but your speed is lacking, spending time building more strength will not benefit you to help you increase your vertical leap. You need to focus on the areas where you lack strength or speed. Most people just need it all, both speed and strength. But if you know you have very strong legs and you workout your legs often, you need to focus more on plyos than strength training. Leg workouts are very important to jumping and you need to have a plan before heading to the gym.

I would rather pay for a jump program that an experienced jump trainer has developed and tested than try to make up my own not knowing how well it work. You can buy a jump program online and they come in the form of an immediate downloadable eBook. This means that the second you buy it, you have access to the password and you can get the workout program, videos and anything else that comes with it. There are about 10 different jumping programs on the Internet right now. I will save you some time and tell you that the best one by far in my opinion is the Jump Manual, Click Here to see it.

A plyometric workout for volleyball or basketball will be very similar but most companies are going to advertise jump programs for basketball because there are more people interested in basketball than volleyball. But don’t worry, if you play volleyball these jump programs are perfect you as well.

Improving your vertical leap is easier than many people make it out to be. You simply have to know which exercises you need to do in order to jump higher. The problem with most people is that they don’t know which workout will increase vertical leap and which ones only feel like they are working but in reality are not.

Jumping exercises number in the hundreds and many of them work depending on when you do them. I’m not talking about at what time of day, I am referring to the time you do them in accordance with other workouts you should be doing to improve vertical leap. You have to get a on a specific workout plan to jump higher if you want to experience great increases in your vertical. You don’t become the best jumper in the world by accident. You have to make sure to follow a jump higher workout routine.

I will give you free tips on how to jump higher so you can make your own workout plan and be able to spot the scams from the real deals when it comes to jump programs. There are many jump programs out there. I have a list of jump programs on this site where you can see reviews of products such as the Jump Manual, Air Alert, Jump Bible, Double Your Vertical and all the other programs on the Internet.

You should NEVER be doing high rep jumping exercises. A perfect example of what not to do is any form of jump rope exercises. Jumping rope does not help you jump higher unless you are going from being sedentary (couch potato) to active.

Another example that would not help you would be running long distances, even if you are running up stairs. Also biking will not help you jump any higher. Jumping on a trampoline will not make you jump higher either because it is more of an endurance exercise. You want to stay in the low rep, very high intensity zone when training your muscles to jump their highest.

Some exercises you should be doing are squats, cleans, plyo box jumps and other low rep plyometric workouts. Exercises to jump higher in volleyball will be the same as basketball workouts for the most part. The only thing that would be different is that you might do a few workouts for basketball that would focus on jumping from one leg.

A workout plan that teaches you how to jump higher is priceless for any athlete that wants to excel at their sport. If you play volleyball or basketball you need to increase your vertical jump by using a well designed workout plan. You can’t simply play basketball or volleyball all day without doing a specific workout routine that focuses on vertical jump training.

Lets look at some jumping exercises you can do to start out your own personal increasing vertical height workout plan. First, you need to make sure that your legs are strong enough to withstand a plyometric training program. The Jump Manual workout (Click Here to see it) has a well designed set of workouts that have been shown to be successful for many people that are trying to learn how to jump higher.

One exercise that I recommend to everyone that is trying to improve their vertical leap is hamstring curls. This may not make sense to you but strong hamstrings will improve your vertical jumping ability. You may not have very strong hamstrings and this could very well be the muscle that is preventing you from jumping higher.

CLICK HERE to see a jumping workout plan that works.

Most people only think of the calf muscles and quads when they want to improve vertical jump height. So one free tip on how to jump higher is by really hitting the muscles that true jump trainers don’t want you to know about. Like your lower back and hamstrings.

If you are wondering why you can’t jump higher and you have never done cleans, you most likely have your answer right there. All professional athletes do cleans because they are so explosive and train your strength as well as speed and you need both of them to produce power.

People are always asking me what exercises increase vertical jump the most. So I will make a list of some great workouts you can do to increase your vertical.

1. Cleans
This exercise is great for building explosive strength in your legs and as a bonus you develop some upper body strength as well. Cleans are performed by lifting a barbell from the ground up to resting on your upper chest. When starting you want to make sure your back stays straight and that you are bending at the knees and not from the back. When you jump you have to have a strong a core because all movement must pass through the core. Cleans will strengthen your back which will help you jump higher.

2. Hamstring Curls
Some knee pain is caused by weak hamstrings and can be fixed by simply strengthening the muscle. Knee pain should not be felt while doing hamstring curls like you might feel during squats. I would recommend you go heavy but not too heavy. You need to be able to bring the weight all the way so that your heels touch your butt. Stay in the low rep range and be prepared to be sore after the first time.

3. Calf Raises
Your calves act as the last little boost that you can give yourself before take off. Most of the time when you are jumping your body weight is already on it’s way up as your calves flex, so this means that you want the calves to be able to explode as quickly as possible with a little less weight than your body. So doing calf raises without any extra weight is fine. I recommend doing some calf raises with heavy weight and doing some jumping exercises where you only use your calves to do the jumping.

4. Box Jumps
If you want to increase your vertical jump you have to train with plyometrics as well as with strength gaining exercises that we have discussed. Plyos are jumping exercises that will train the golgi tendon reflexes to react with more precision. Do not do plyos on the same day that you train the big leg muscles. Plyometrics and weight training should be done on different days. The goal with plyometric exercises is not to tire the muscle from high rep activity but to make it more explosive for maximum jump height. Take a plyo box that is high enough to wear it scares you to jump on and then do low reps. If you can do 15 reps on a box, it is not high enough. You can do box jumps on lower boxes but you should not reset before jumping each time. This means as soon as your feet touch the ground you will explode back up on the box. This will train your fibers to fire with more precision.
